We are two mild-mannered Americans who up and moved to the small town of Bielefeld, Germany. My husband is a year-long visiting researcher and instructor at the university here. Meanwhile, I do a little bit of this and that, including writing, knitting, teaching English and navigating scary things like “the bank” and “the washing machine”. We got on the plane not knowing what to expect, and every day here brings something new. We’re using this blog as a way to share our brilliant insights (and digital photos) with friends and family. However, we’re hoping this can be a source of information if you’re moving to this area, or if you’re just wondering what it’s like to take a sudden break from your regularly scheduled programming.

Thanks for visiting me – I nearly moved to Germany with my partner last year and would have been the same knitting and writing housewife who still can’t navigate the washing machine and has no patience for Spanish banks.
Looking forward to reading more!
Different country, same experiences. We had quite a fiasco with our washing machine! Here’s a link to my post about it:

I hope you continue to enjoy your time in Germany! My husband and I have three months left of our school year in Hungary.
Thanks for finding our blog (http://aeuropeanadventure.wordpress.com/)! I’m looking forward to reading more of your posts! It’s nice to hear from other Americans living in Germany.
What an entertaining blog you have! One year in Bielefeld – Viel Glück!
We lived in Bavaria for three years, and I can relate to sooooo much of what you say here. Enjoy the quirks and the lifestyle while you can—you’ll miss it when you’re gone!
Thanks for the likes! Your blog is great! We used to come to Germany every year when I was a child so it’s lovely to be reminded of everything. Pop over to Dubai again soon if you get the chance – I’ll be posting a little more about the joys of Bavaria after living in the desert for 4 years!

Hi! Thanks for stopping by my blog. I really enjoyed looking around yours, and especially discovering that you are in Bielefield – I know an American who is studying at the university there, what a coincidence 😉 keep up the interesting posts!
Thanks, and I love your blog as well! Always fun to read about other travelers. I hope your friend is enjoying his time at Bielefeld. It’s a quiet town, but really beautiful in the spring/summer.
Thanks for inspiring me! I have just nominated you for the Inspiring Blog Award. http://expatiallymexico.wordpress.com/2012/08/13/nominated-for-the-inspiring-blog-award/

Thanks a lot for stopping by! Curious about your stuff now…
Hi there,
thanks for visiting my blog [http://pitstexasexpatblog.wordpress.com/2012/09/03/beer-tasting-1/], “liking” it and leaving a comment there. That way I became aware of your blog and I like it: very interesting. Will be checking out more of your posts soon. Bielefeld, btw, is not too far from the place where I was born, Krefeld. I used to have relatives in Bielefeld, but I’ve lost contact to them.
Anyway, I hope you’ll enjoy your time in my native country.
Take care, and have a good one,
Pit
It looks like Krefeld is not too far from us, and practically in the Netherlands! Thanks for checking out my blog. I will be reading more of yours as well!
Thanks for stopping by one of my blogs. I am glad you enjoyed the post.
I’ve only just begun reading a few of your posts- and they are hilarious. Thanks for sharing! We’re going to try to pop over to Germany a few times while we’re living in Paris. Is there an article on your blog where you suggest your favorite places? À bientôt-
Thanks! I don’t have an article specifically like that, but you can check out places we’ve visited by city. Do you have anything in particular that you know you want to see here? We’ve mostly traveled in the north so far.
Hi Sam. Thanks for dropping by my blog. After our Rhine River cruise we spent three extra days in Amsterdam and then three more days in Osnabruck to see the places where my ancestors lived. We visited Alswede, Stemshorn, Dielingen, Meyerhofen and Hunteberg. All of these places are about 30 minutes north of Bielefeld near the borders of Westfalen and Nordrhein. I’ll be posting about our travels in this part of Germany next month.
Alswede,AAlswede,

Thanks for visiting my blog! I lived in a small town in Germany growing up from the ages 3 to 6 years old while my dad was stationed at one of the US Army bases there. I have wonderful, albeit few, memories from there. Glad to have found your blog.
Thanks! I enjoy reading about your travels as well. It’s good to hear that you have such nice memories of Germany 🙂
